May 30 PEP-N meeting summary Dear all, Here is the summary of the meeting of May 30, all the best, Gianluigi. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snowmass. There will be 3 talks (1 on the detector and 2 on the physics) about PEP-N experiment and probabliy they will be concentrated in the session of July 7. There will also be a talk by M. Sullivan on the accelerator aspects on July 6. Background. Simulations are being made assuming a 3cm radius beam pipe. A 2.5 cm mask positioned 20 cm upstream of the Interaction Point is designed as a shield from quadrupole synchrotron radiation. A background section will be added to the padova web page. Simulation. Mario and Matteo have reorganized and divided the Monte Carlo routines GUKINE and UGEOM in order to semplify their structure. BGO crystal calorimeter. Paolo shows the note on the crystal calorimeter. The study is based on a calorimeter made of BGO crystals with PMT readout and considering only forward and barrel calorimeters. The poles are not considered for the moment, but a difficulty could arise due to the maximum length of crystals. With respect to lead-scifi solution, the BGO option offers the advantage of an excellent energy resolution, but on the other hand a slightly poorer position resolution is foreseen. The timing resolution will be considerably worst with respect to scintillating fiber and the cost would be roughly a factor 4 higher. See em-calorimeter section on the web page for more details. Matteo will simulate the increasing of the energy resolution and the decreasing of the position resolution to see the impact on particle reconstruction. LOI D.Bettoni and M.Mandelkern have worked out a proposal for the organization of the new Letter of Intent, with a first assignment of responsibilities for the various sections and subsections. These are discussed in some detail, and an updated version of the proposed new LOI can be found on our web page. AOB The PEP-N project has been presented by D.Bettoni to the INFN funding committee (Commissione I). The presentation was preceded by a nice talk by italian theorist P.Nason, who concentrated on the physics of R and the impact PEP-N could make on both g-2 and the evolution of alpha_em to the Z mass. Both talks can be found on the web page. The committee expects another presentation at the september meeting. Next Meeting The next meeting will be on June 12 at 8:30 am.
